How to Choose a Dental Scaler

These ten rows are hand scalers. Buying criteria that change the instrument

• Where the listing says it works — Anterior: Jack B. Nimble, Talon Tough U15, and Nevi 1. Anterior and posterior: Bliss M23. Posterior: Eagle Claw and Scalette N135. Supragingival: H5/33 and the U6/7 table cell. Area-specific: the Hu-Friedy hygienist row. H6/H7 leaves area blank.
• Sickle, curette, or hygienist — Most rows are sickles. Scalette N135 puts a sickle on one end and a curette on the other, and it is the only row with blade widths. The Hu-Friedy hygienist row says the cutting edge is offset 70° to the terminal shank. H6/H7 is a hygienist scaler with a Harmony handle. Eagle Claw’s title is a sickle; the paragraph calls the same instrument a contra-angled curette.
