To become an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, a US-trained dentist must go to an additional 4 – 6 years of hospital-based residency, which also includes anesthesia training, after graduating from a dental school. Approximately 40% of the oral surgeons in the USA do the 6-yr track, which also includes attending a medical school.

This was the track chosen by Dr. Massoomi, where he attended Vanderbilt University Medical School (VUMC). Subsequent to this, Dr. Massoomi decided to further his training even more by doing a one year fellowship in Facial and Cosmetic surgery at an AACS-certified program.

Currently as an ABOMS board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Massoomi manages a wide variety of problems related to face and mouth, including trauma, with expertise in improving patient’s smiles using dental implants and other complex procedures involving the oral cavity. He is a pioneer in robotic surgery of the face, and was the first oral surgeon in the USA to help develop the YOMI robot starting in 2012. This robot is the first and only FDA-approved robot for the placement of dental implants. As a pioneer, he prides himself in using the latest technology in order to improve patient outcomes. He is known for using minimally-invasive techniques, with no incisions, in order to improve outcomes and to reduce the patient’s post-operative discomfort, to expedite the healing of his patients.
