I had extensive bone grafting, sinus lifts etc, he placed the implant onto the bone grafting the same day, they have been in for 5 months and had no issues so far
I had mine done by one of the best implantologists in Europe though, they all have different skill levels
Hi, can you tell me where did you don’t, what country and clinic? Thanks
Where did they take your bone from? Mine’s going to be pig/cow. I wasn’t originally too happy about this but the alternative would be from my chin.
artificial bone

I suggest trying to educate yourself to lessen your worries. Ask questions. What type of graft is? Why are we using this graft vs another? Allograft vs xeno vs auto? What happens if the sutures break free and graft is exposed? Would it.be better if the implant was placed another time in case the graft did not work (the last thing you want is for a failed graft and an exposed implant in the front tooth). You mentioned upper front teeth…this is a very difficult area to get good results. I don’t know the severity of your bone loss or how many teeth involved, but google search some terms like “Istvan Urban sausage technique” or “block graft”. I think once you’ve gotten enough information to make yourself comfortable for the procedure, that’s when you should proceed.
Winston M. I had a CT scan which showed I had no bone left. I had an apescectomy a long time ago after a dental error. Just the one tooth.
FYI, I read above another option would be from your chin…did you ask them if they can take it from the ramus (usually accessed from the side of your lower molars)? An autogenous graft might be more predictable especially if it’s a front tooth.
Winston M. they would prefer to not put me through any unnecessary procedure, although it must have more chance of rejecting cow/pig?
Karen G. when he did my bone graft in the SAME EXACT SPOT my Dr did something with a support pin (I can see it in the scans) and now that it’s healed I’m amazed at the results.
Karen G. arrange to get a flipper (small partial denture) for the healing period. Not perfect (I could never eat with mine) but better than nothing. I would try to get someone to go with you if possible.
you will be fine I have had both Allograft, which I like better and Xeno. It really is not a big deal at least neither were for me the allo was done by and oral surgeon and the xeno by general dentist. you can always stay overnight in the town you are having the procedure done in.
Linda G. I need to get back to my family, and London is not cheap to stay over. Not looking forward to the 30 min walk to the train station, then over 2hr journey on the train all with a tooth missing at the front.
Linda G. agree. Ask if they can make you one so after the surgery you can wear it home?
Lisa H. i have false uppers but they didnt want me pasting them in and they wouldnt stay I finally got the ok to paste them in too painful. Just got to wait until they go back to work
Hi Karen G., your situation sounds a little similar to mine. I had an implant procedure in front tooth go bad last year and required a major bone graft in the front, tooth#9. Trust me when I say let them do the grafting it will make a huge difference in the aesthetic outcome. A bone graft sounds strange but it’s really no big deal. The outcome will be worth it.
I actually have a pin supporting the bone graft on tooth number 9 that can only be seen on a scan.
My damage was so severe that an implant could not be placed where the first one failed and my current procedure is bridging over that area with implants.
Wendy C. poor you, sounds awful. I worry also that it’s going to fail, or it’ll look unsightly or not a perfect match, then I’ll wish I never went through it all
Karen G. I hope this will give you some reassurance but that implant failure was my DRS fault. I knew something was amiss but she refused to listen. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to ask questions when something concerns you. It’s your mouth! I was understandably devastated with the fall out but once I had a plan with an amazing Dr it’s been a really positive experience ever since. It’s been 20 long months since this all began and I’m finally approaching the last stage of my treatment and can’t wait for my new smile! As far as the esthetic outcome, there are many things they can -and cannot do, depending on how much bone they have to work with. But even if they have to add some artificial gum to your restoration the result should be much better than whatever you’re dealing with now. It wasn’t an easy process but consider the alternative. Do nothing and still be depressed later on, wishing you’d just gotten it over with. Knowing there was a light at the end absolutely saved my sanity.
Best wishes.
There are implants designed for minimally invasive treatment that do not require bone graft. depending on case ofc.
Hi Karen. I had sinus lift and extensive bone grafting yesterday. I had pig membrane put in and cow bone mixed with my own.
Peta S. how do you feel? Much bruising/swelling/pain?
Karen G. it was a bit mad last night. Paracetamol did nothing. Luckily I have some dihydrocodeine and the pain went. Today I’ve had no pain but the side I had the sinus lift and graft is fine. The other side the bruise is coming out but it’s quite big. I’ve been using my ice and taking my antibiotics and steroids the dentist gave me. All In all its a win win. I had soup when I got in and a soft fish pie for tea. Today I’ve had scrambled eggs for breakfast, tuna and soft rice for lunch and noodle and a curry sauce for dinner.
Peta S. oh bless you. You are so brave. Why did they give you steroids? I’m glad you’re not in too much pain now. I’m considering pulling out, I have generalised anxiety disorder and I know I’m going to have a panic attack over it. People’s comments about the titanium being toxic to the body etc is all worrying me. I keep thinking if it all goes wrong can they take it all out again?
Sorry to sound negative and I hope you are really happy with yours so far.
Karen G. im having titanium implants to in 9 months. If you were to have a cage renewed in your back that would be titanium too. I have 22 permanent titanium staples in my stomach and Ive never had any problem with it.
Peta S. that’s reassuring thank you.
Peta S. how you feeling?
Karen G. I’m feeling really good. So glad I had it done. It the waiting thats the pain now but my implant dentist is making me some retainers with teeth on to fill in the gaps for now. I pick them up on Wednesday. Hopefully the look of having some teeth will make me feel better as its a long wait to get my implants. How are you feeling?
Peta S. sorry for delay. Had a lot going on here with one thing and another and obviously this worrying time. As I was going to be going to London last Thursday for the procedure we both agreed it are sensible to cancel for now, and that would have happened anyway. I’m so glad to hear yours has gone well. Hope the retainers are looking good for you 😁
Karen G. Thank you. Ive got more bone grafting on the bottom left booked for April, but if it doesn’t go ahead then and I have to wait. I said I didn’t want to wait any longer so he will still put my top ones in at the end of the year and my bottom ones can go in after 😁. I promise you that you have nothing to worry about. If you’re anything like me you will panic and then wondered after why you panicked lol xx
Peta S. yes I have generalised anxiety disorder and was lying awake at night worrying. You have really reassured me, thank you. I won’t be as nervous I’m sure when it comes around again for me. So glad yours going well.
Karen G. How are you. Did you have it done?
Good luck.
Charlene B. thank you 😊 although I have to travel over 2 hrs and now not sure if I can go because my partner, who was coming with me on the train has had to self isolate ☹
Now I’m feeling really anxious because I don’t know whether to go on my own and travel home on the train afterwards
Karen G. 🙁
Karen, I just saw your post. Can you give me an update how it went for you? We’re you happy?
I’m terrified and want to cancel my extraction this week. But I’m not.
Really hope yours turned out 🙏🏻any words of wisdom or regrets?
Dot F. unfortunately I haven’t had anything done yet. I have an appointment tomorrow in London with a new dentist that’s training to do implants. Tomorrow is just another assessment, then from there we should be booking the bone graft. I am very nervous and constantly questioning if I’m doing the right thing. If mine wasn’t a front tooth I wouldn’t be going for an implant to be honest.
Karen G. I’m on my second implant. Last was a molar. It was so painful so I was scared. I had mine pulled yesterday, my top front tooth. So HAPPY I finally had it extracted. It was a bad root canal. There was some pain last night. I took one pain pill. I woke up this morning pain free and no swelling. I pray it says this way. I didn’t not have a tooth. I went to my dentist and brought the tooth. He bonded/ glued it the space to the 2 teeth. It looks great for now.
Do not be afraid. I wish you look. Lucky I have the extra money but this tooth when it’s finally finished will be close to $8,000. 😢 I have no dental insurance and all want money up front!
Karen G. the bone graft was painless! Just my pocketbook hurts. Tooth extraction and graft and consult was $875
To put my tooth on was $400 and I have to take it off and put it back on 2 more times during implant. Implant is going to take 8 to 9 months
Do not pack out. My front tooth was infected. I’ve been ill a lot over the past years. I really think it was from this tooth. good luck and hugs!
