Yuppp. I had cow bone placed when I had my sinus lift.
Yes I was shocked too AND i founds out after the fact 😬
Yes. You are normally told beforehand in case you have ethical or religious objections.
Tam H. I wish I was told for one of those reasons.
Yes
Yes, it’s called bovine graft.
Yes but I got human cadaver bone.
should I be worried about mad cow disease?
I have an implant that cracked and now I have to have it dug out, built up and a new implant placed. The docs say they’ve never seen an implant crack before. It’s been 4 years since placement. I’m worried about the cow bone (amongst everything else).
Theresa C. Out of curiosity what brand implant was it? Must have been a ‘faulty implant perhaps. My mum had a faulty implant maybe 15 years ago, can’t remember the brand though.
Monta S. Astra?
It might have been Astra to be honest. Hers cracked as well. They can also use your own tissue for the graft or pigs (porcine) tissue.
Monta S. I would like them to use my own bone. I really need 2nd implant next to the cracked one & they want to use cow bone to build up that area. I got the 1st implant just to see how it went before getting the 2nd one – but didn’t turn out so well.
what kind of implant was it?
Molar
Catherine G. Astra manufacture. I think it is #30 or 32 (I need both).
Theresa C. what kind of material
Catherine G. titanium
Theresa C. wow I have never heard of titanium cracking
Catherine G. that’s what they said too.
I had bone graft from a cadaver, pretty creepy but necessary🤔🤔
I was never told
I had a bone graft in my arm bone 50 years ago and have never had any problems. Not dental related but a cow bone graft.
Es that’s what I wanted
Pat B. you wanted cow bone?
Theresa C. it’s better than dead people and my bone is no good cause I’m full of osteoporosis and I figure a cow has a very strong jaw and I read don’t want pig.
Pat B. the doc says cow was strongest.
Yes
Yes
I have had my five titanium implants for years with no problems. I think they are selling you a story. Titanium. Is STRONG. Did you check this dental group out with the BBB? Was this done in the US or out of the country?
Mary Ann H. titanium is strong but the question is asking about bone grafts.
Mary Ann H. I know it’s cracked. I have pic. It’s rare.
Theresa C. I have seen a cracked implant before. Rare but not impossible.
Yuck
Some dentist use bovine as a bone graft, others use cadaver bone. I have both.

Why don’t use synthetic bone graft?
Shahril I. idk. It wasn’t discussed.
Yes cow bone is actually better then human bone…
Moooost Certainly. All bone grafting materials to be used surgically go through vigorous steps, inspections and purification.
Bruce S. I’m counting on that! So you’ve never heard of mad cow disease transferred? I think it’s called- vCJD
Theresa C. You’re right. It’s called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
I was glad mine was cow and not human. Something about human bone totally eeked me out. Cows are sooo cute.
Bovine bone is very similar to human bone histologically
Is there any other ingredients mixed in with bone graft material?
Julie M. 🤷♂️
yes, ….
