I just make sure I have the patients separately on the statement not mingled.
If I mail a statement, I physically hi-light the balance due in the upper right corner to help patients understand the balance.
Don’t intermingle the family members and it’s easy to understand.
I don’t like OD ledger or statements
I write a note on each statement, indicating where the balance is from. Like an amalgam downgrade, or they didn’t pay something.
I really struggle trying to figure out where the balance is coming from. I tried the Service Date view, but if the patient prepaid or placed a deposit…it doesn’t help! It would be so nice if you could pull each claim out separately and have it in a box and move all transactions associated with that claim in the box. Ledgers are really the only reason why I would consider dumping OD.

Lori M. thanks. We do too. But I still find it tedious to go through and figure out that we charged x, you paid x, you should have paid z. It would be nice to have each DOS in a box and then once there is no balance that box goes darker grey or something.
i always write in the notes section “Patient balance is due to Date of Service XXX, for procedure on tooth XXX… and I write exactly why the EOB says they paid less. I will also highlight the part on the procedure that says Patient Portion and Patient Pays
When posting a payment, if there is a balance I write why in the notes section, and send them an e statement letting them know they will receive an EOB in a separate email, and I usually provide a statement as well for that DOS. I don’t like to talk on the phone all that much so doing all of this minimizes me answering billing questions.
I’ve never had a patient complain and the reason being is because ALL my payments and credits are allocated correctly. So if I click on the payment, insurance and click on Statement (limited) it will attach the procedures and payment together and easily explained what they paid and what insurance paid.
