Why is it when I post a payment some goes to the “unearned”
And do I have to split payments? Or can I not?
I’m new at this so need to figure this out.
I’m going to call Open Dental tomorrow but didn’t know if someone could help me.

To me this is the worst thing about OD, i hate the splits and dont understand how all that works. Following
Highlight the services you want the payment applied to. This solved my problems
Lisa T. okay so after I post insurance payment
And it shows the split columns, just highlight those?
Then it should add up???
Tashia T. ins payment you should apply line items (by procedure) not total payments
Lisa T. I did that
I filed her claim
She paid her portion
And now it’s showing some in the unearned box
Tashia T. when you open the payment on the left side does it show services attached?
Lisa T. yes
Tashia T. does each line item say ins paid, pt paid, pt portion?
Lisa T. yes!
Then when I go to account ledger it’s showing unearned
Tashia T. click on the arrow on the payment button and click allocate unearned .
Lisa T. okay I’ll try that tomorrow!!
Thank u so much
Like I posted a $3400 payment
When I printed out payments it showed she paid less because some was in unearned box
Tashia T. that’s what we do. It’s likely from previous dates of service. With each end of day we run a pt uncollected report that will show you unattached payments before they become a problem. Usually you just have to delete the payment and highlight the services and apply the payment. If not the drop down of allocate unearned and/or income transfer usually fixes it. There is like a 2 % of the time it doesn’t.
Ladies. I’m new to open dental and learned a lot. Always attach payment to procedure. Always attach adjustment to procedure. Life Will be a breeze after that. Patient calls about his balance? Quick look at account and you can see where they owe as long as it’s properly allocated.
Yes I’m new to this too!
We are a new practice, I’m the hygienist and doing both.
I’ve used denture, easy dental, eagle soft.
This is so much more confusing! It’s frustrating!
Thank u for helping!
Tashia T. eagle soft was way easier
