Implants or No on Back Tooth

Okay what should I do ladies and gentlemen. My left back tooth needs to be taken out because it is completely dead. The the farthest in the back. Implants or no?

      1. Priscilla C. cause it’s a hit or miss whether it will be a success. I just had five implants all on the top 2 weeks ago and the pain is unbearable

  1. For one in the back I wouldn’t do an implant. Just do a bone graft so it doesn’t collapse I had 2 extractions without bone graft and the gum collapsed.

      1. Priscilla C. no I do need another extraction so I will definitely get bone graft. For the other ones I would have to do another surgery basically to add bone graft. 🙁
        Do it all at once.

    1. Adriana C. I had my second molar removed and didn’t do the bone graft because I was adamant about no implant. Can I go back and get the bone graft now? I think if you get the bone graft that new bone will eventually resorb without a tooth there but I could be wrong

      1. Julie M. I was not sure I was doing an implant either. So I had no bone graft done. I decided to do it because I didn’t like the way my face looked with out it. I’m older and it really showed! Plus you will have issues with the teeth above eventually if you do not.
I was going to have graft the same time as my implant. But the oral surgeon decided I did NOT need one for that tooth..
I did need a graft on my front tooth.

      2. Julie M. do not listen to others. Your decision. Talk to your dentist. One dentist to,d me not to, the one I love and trust told me I’d be sorry if I didn’t.
Find an oral surgeon that does hundreds. Do not do a one day one. They have a higher rate of failing

      1. Priscilla C. I’m in a process of getting one. Just got back molar extracted last Friday. I think that we have all teeth for a reason and should replace them if necessary rather than leave a gap.

  2. Hard to keep clean. I had an upper left rear molar removed in my 20s cause it broke ( on a hard cookie). When I had my wisdom teeth pulled he pulled that also. I’ve never missed it in 40 years. No space cause it was the last tooth. I even had braces in my 40s.

    1. Deborah K. I have lost two back molars in my twenties. Did your above teeth slowly come down in the missing space?

  3. I am in the same situation. I lost my 2nd molar and some people tell me I should get an implant and others say dont bother. Is it on the bottom?

  4. If you want to be pragmatic about it, see how much the missing tooth affects your eating. You might find it doesn’t bother you.

    1. Jeff W. its been two months for me since I lost a bottom second molar and I am slowly getting used to it but I still wish I had a tooth there

    2. Jeff W. I just did today. I’m not using it really. The use the second one before it when breaking down my food.

  5. I chose not to because it was the furthest from the back and used the money to implant the teeth closer in front.

  6. You use these teeth for less than 5% of chewing. That would be a hard no for me. I had all 4 pulled years ago and haven’t missed them ever.

    1. Carin G. I just had my second molar pulled and the decision to replace it is giving me so much anxiety. I feel like I miss the tooth so much and that gap is there bugging me constantly lol. but I am also not chewing on that side because its a bit tender still. Of course the oral surgeon tells me I should replace it because if not it will put stress on the other teeth and caused an unbalanced bite, more problems down the road, etc. But others say ill get used to it. Just so I’m understanding, you don’t have any second molars? Only firsts so 24 teeth total and you can eat whatever? That makes me feel so much better. Reading these stories on this page is scaring me from ever letting an oral surgeon touch me again haha

      1. Julie M. correct. I have no 2nd year molars. I had so many problems I could have kept them and continue to treat them, or I could just get rid of them. I never missed them but it took a couple months to heal. That said if you still have the opposing it could erupt which might be why they recommend.

    2. Carin G. im so glad to hear that, thank you. How long have you been without them? Did you ever notice bone loss or big dips? Its been two months and while it’s healing fine it seems like it’s soooo slow. I guess that was a huge tooth socket to fill in but I am impatient!

      1. Julie M. it’s been since like 2014. It takes time for the sockets to close and feel like normal though. My husband had that same tooth pulled a year ago December and doesn’t even notice it (just the one like you).

      1. Julie M. I do. I have on #9 with a canteleavor on 10, and just had one placed on 12 which is pre-crown. I’m just waiting to find out if I will now need to replace 11 😥.

  7. You are young, get implant. It also will eventually change shape of your face. I did my bottom back molar.

      1. Julie M. I had pain yesterday. Today NONE. But it’s a front tooth. I had no tooth and went to my regular dentist and bonded the removed tooth on to my other teeth. I’m in a little bit of pain tonight.
You went though the bad part! I think the extraction is worse then the implant.

  8. If you can speak ok and eat ok, I wouldn’t go to the big expense to replace. Only if it was in the front where clearly visible when u talk

  9. Priscilla C. Ask your dentist what he recommends. My dentist and an oral surgeon both told me that the last molar (the one in front of the wisdom teeth) does not need to be replaced because “people do just fine without those”.

  10. To people, who said “just remove you dont need it” whats going to happen when the tooth across starts growing downwards?

Our Story

Dental Country was born out of a simple yet profound idea: to bridge the gap between dental professionals and the public by providing an all-encompassing platform for dental knowledge. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Sean Myran, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dental Country started as a response to the growing need for a reliable and comprehensive online resource where both dental professionals and everyday people could find trustworthy, accurate, and well-researched information about dentistry and oral health.

Dr. Myran had witnessed first-hand the complexities faced by dental professionals, from managing successful practices to staying up-to-date with the latest dental technology and products. At the same time, he noticed how challenging it was for patients to find accurate, digestible information about dental procedures, oral hygiene products, and how to choose the right dentist. This dual perspective inspired him to create Dental Country, an online space that could cater to both audiences.

What started as a small blog quickly grew into a multifaceted platform with a wide range of dental resources—from practice management tips to in-depth product reviews and educational articles on oral health. Over the years, Dental Country has expanded its offerings to meet the evolving needs of dental professionals and patients alike. Today, it is one of the most trusted names in dental content, recognized for its dedication to quality, transparency, and accessibility.

Located in Lake Forest, CA, Dental Country has reached thousands of readers across the country and continues to grow. Through collaboration with dental experts, product reviewers, and a passionate team of healthcare copywriters, Dental Country has remained committed to its mission of providing well-rounded, authoritative dental content that helps everyone—from seasoned dental practitioners to families looking to improve their oral health.

Whether we are producing an article for patients seeking information on a dental procedure or conducting an in-depth review of dental products for industry professionals, our approach remains consistent: provide reliable, actionable insights backed by research and professional experience.

Every piece of content begins with extensive research. Our team of copywriters and dental experts gather information from peer-reviewed studies, respected dental publications, and input from dental professionals. We also consult product specifications and customer feedback when reviewing dental tools, equipment, and services to provide a well-rounded view. Accuracy is our top priority, and each article is carefully fact-checked and edited to ensure it provides readers with clear, actionable, and reliable information.

We understand that dental professionals have different needs than the general public, which is why we produce tailored content for both audiences. For dentists and practice owners, we provide practice management tips, dental marketing strategies, and product reviews that are critical to their day-to-day operations. We go beyond the basics by offering detailed analyses of emerging trends and innovations in the dental industry, helping professionals stay ahead of the curve. For the public, we focus on making complex dental topics easy to understand. Our goal is to demystify dental care, empowering patients to take control of their oral health and make well-informed decisions.

This network will allow for peer-to-peer learning and foster a community of shared knowledge and support, helping professionals stay updated on the latest industry trends and innovations. We envision this space as a hub for dental experts to exchange ideas and help each other succeed in a competitive and rapidly evolving field.

For patients, we are expanding our content library to include more multimedia resources like videos, infographics, and interactive guides. These resources will cover everything from understanding dental procedures to improving daily oral hygiene habits. By offering a more visual and interactive learning experience, we aim to make dental care more approachable and less intimidating for the general public.

Our long-term vision is to become the most comprehensive online platform for dental education. We aim to be the first place both dental professionals and patients turn to for trusted, up-to-date information. To support this, we are exploring partnerships with leading dental schools, healthcare organizations, and technology companies that will allow us to provide cutting-edge educational tools, research, and data-driven insights.

The future of Dental Country is bright, and we look forward to continuing to serve the dental community and the public for many years to come.
