With regular brushing and flossing, the implant screw itself can last a lifetime, assuming the patient receives regular dental check-ups every 6 months. The crown, however, usually only lasts about 10 to 15 years before it may need a replacement due to wear and tear.
Hi. Mine have been in now for over 23 years now. 😁👍
Lynsey C. how often do they remove them to clean?
Lisa L. erm never. Well once years ago but that’s cos one of the teeth was damaged. So they repaired it and put them back in but that’s it. Taking them out and cleaning them has never been a thing for me.
Lynsey C. hii, is there anything you can’t eat with implants or you avoid eating….
Ashish K. I’ve generally eaten what I want but I don’t have implants at the front. Mine are on the top on both sides. I’ve stopped eating granola and I don’t eat really really hard food. I wouldn’t eat toffee. I’m not sure if it would damage them but I avoid them types of food just to be safe.
You don’t have to answer this, but there the price of a car aren’t they? I’m disabled and probably couldn’t afford them any way.
Jenny M. the NHS did mine
Lynsey C. on what grounds did they do yours? That’s amazing! I had various crowns and bridges on the NHS but by the time I needed implants the NHS options had shrunk.
Lindsay H. I have Hypodontia (didn’t have any 2nd teeth – around 6 missing) so it was quite a journey to getting implants but I was young and just got on with it. Would I go through it again. I’m not so sure but who knows if and when they fail. I owe the NHS a lot because without them I wouldn’t be who I am today. I’m sure you know how teeth or having no teeth can affect you so much. The nhs have been amazing and still are. My dentist has been with me most of my journey. He’s amazing. I’d give him a medal if I could 😁
Lindsay H. oh wow. Yours is defo worse than mine as I still have front and back teeth. You’re older than me too so it should have been available for you on nhs back then too . What a shame it was never looked into or offered for you because without the nhs like I say I would be a different person. It’s crazy how much teeth can affect your self confidence. I still panic now when something goes wrong with my implants cos I know what’s coming. I feel like a little girl again and I’m 43 now 🤣 think it’s in me too over panic when anything happens to my teeth and I’m sure I’m not alone in that way of thinking. I’m not scared of the dentist, in fact if anything I’d go every week if I could 😁 I just panic when I get a twinge or anything. Maybe I should marry an implant dentist then I’d never have to worry again 🤣🤣 xx
Lindsay H. what is NHS
Shelby Lynn W. National Health Service in the U.K. Free healthcare and (formerly) dentistry.
Lindsay H. oooooo
Shelby Lynn W. yes it is and was amazing. Just a bit (!) overloaded now because governments. But it’s still incredible. They’ve had it since the 1950s. Also it’s here in Spain though not quite as comprehensive I think though not overloaded, very well funded and extremely good.
Lindsay H. Im assuming it’s only for uk residents
Shelby Lynn W. I would honestly say it wasn’t only used by residents but they’ve toughened up on the criteria for access. And there’s practically no NHS for dental work now. Also my implant work was quoted to me as £45,000 in London and has been 13,000€ here.
Lindsay H. Wait. You’re saying the implant Technic was available in the 1950s?
Walter D. whut?
Lynsey C. they don’t remove and clean yours wondering why some dentist do and some dont
Penny E. not sure but no it’s never been offered either by NHS or privately. I go to both now as it’s not something my NHS dentist can do for me as I have mine cleaned but just around then. They don’t actually take them out.
Wow thats a positive ray of hope .things will get better and stay better
The connection of the implant and quality of the material that the implant is made from is very important for a life long implant.
Troy L. what material is considered best quality?
Nicole P. titanium alloy
Nicole P. pure grade 4 titanium. You go grade 5 like most implant companies do and you get 10% aluminum and vanadium which is not good for bio compatibility. The connection is even more important than the material imo. If you get anything besides an implant with a Morse taper connection than you aren’t looking for an implant for life. You are looking for bone loss. Simple as that and all the clinical proof to support that statement.
Troy L. I disagree. I’ve seen 25 year old external hex implants look like they were placed and loaded yesterday. Blanket statements are not productive. I also agree Morse taper is best for bone and gingival health but what about the rare problems with those like cold welding?
Vesna B. Sorry wasn’t trying to make blanket statement. I see your point. Cold welding is also a great point. Newer Morse taper systems have unlocking features to avoid this but this is def a problem from older Morse taper technology. Can’t argue that.
The titanium implant itself should last a lifetime although they can fail due to poor oral hygiene as well as changes to your general health. The crowns which is the part you see most drs and labs who make them give a 5 year warranty. But a general rule of thumb is you’ll need to replace them every 10 years 15 if you’re lucky. Hope this helps
Troy L. great info!!
I hope mine last for ever!

Some days some a lifetime all depends how your body takes to the implant
Nothing
They should last a lifetime if they’re regularly maintained. You’ll have to switch out the “dentures” every so many years depending on the material you chose. Mine is so I’ll have to pay less than 4k every 5-10 for replacements. They’ll keep my titanium bar and just rebuild around it so it’ll be much cheaper than a new full set.
