Can I Use Mouthwash With Clear Aligners?
TABLE OF CONTENT

Mouthwash and clear aligners can totally coexist – when used properly! Many patients ask if they can keep swishing mouth rinses during Invisalign treatment or if the alcohol will damage their aligners.

The short answer is yes, go ahead and use mouthwash while wearing clear aligners. In fact, I actually recommend using an antiseptic alcohol-free rinse once daily, especially at night. The key is being mindful about how you use mouthwash with aligners. Here are my tips:

Can I smoke while wearing clear aligners?

  • Choose an alcohol-free formula to avoid drying out your mouth or aligner plastic. Biotene and Crest Pro Health are great options. The antiseptic rinses are just as effective for freshening breath without the alcohol risks.
  • Swish gently when aligners are in your mouth. Don’t aggressively swish and gargle or you could dislodge or damage the trays.
  • Soak your aligners in the mouthwash 1-2 times per week. Popping aligners into a mouthwash bath helps kill germs and bacteria buildup. Just rinse well afterward before inserting aligners again.
  • Take aligners out first if using a strong alcohol-based formula. The high alcohol concentration could interact with aligner plastic and cause cracking. I suggest using gentler alcohol-free formulas whenever possible.
  • Talk to your orthodontist about recommended brands or any concerns. They can review ingredients and frequency to customize the best mouthwash schedule for your treatment plan and oral health needs.

So take advantage of mouthwash benefits during Invisalign! Just be selective on the formula and careful when using with aligners in your mouth. With some thoughtful use, mouthwash can enhance your aligner experience.
