Dental crown or cap is used for restoring lost tooth structure. These are some of the indications for a dental crown:

.  Loss of tooth structure beyond 50%
.  History of root canal treatment on a tooth
.  Using the tooth as an anchor for a bridge
.  History of multiple fractures on a tooth
.  Restoring high pressure areas of a tooth
.  As part of bite (occlusal) correction for the mouth
.  Some cosmetic cases

Regardless of the indication, dental crowns can come in different forms. The most common type of a dental crown is called Porcelain-fused-to-metal. This type of dental crown consists of a metal core (coping) with porcelain on the top. The metal framework gives the crown strength and the porcelain improves the esthetics.

In recent years with introduction of new porcelain injection techniques and also CAD-CAM technology that allows creating a crown out of a porcelain block, new full porcelain crowns have been introduced to the market.

While these type of crowns offer superb cosmetic results, their strength and durability is still under evaluation.
